Building connections

The team and I designed and built a feature to allow students to connect with companies at job conventions. If a student found a certain company interesting, they could scan the company’s QR code and “connect” with them immediately via the Orbi app. This, in turn, would allow the company to view the user who scanned them and keep a record for later, hopefully helping both parties find what they’re looking for.

Since building this feature, it has been used over 10,000 times and has helped many companies find potential candidates.

Adding gamification

I wanted to take this feature to the next level and entice students to continue scanning company QR codes. By turning the act of scanning into a game, students would earn points and enter a leaderboard, representing not just themselves but their universities as well.

Creating the prototype

I set out to redesign the Orbi app to cater to the new gamification elements. From leaderboards to badges, I wanted to include as much gamification as possible and encourage students to scan as many QR codes.

To effectively convey the idea, the prototype had to look like the real thing.

Below are a few screenshots of the prototype.

Parking the idea

I presented the idea to the CEO and Tech Lead. Although they loved the concept and appreciated my initiative, we soon realised that building such a feature would require many developer hours, which was not currently in the roadmap. While it's unfortunate that we couldn't progress with this idea, I'm positive I will find new ways to incorporate gamification into the app in the future.
